Several scales are used for the functional assessment of balance, such as the Performance Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA), the Balance Evaluation Systems Test (BESTest), the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), and the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). To prevent these negative outcomes, functional assessment of balance is a tool used in clinical practice and research to identify early problems in postural control and to predict fall risk in older adults. Postural instability has serious implications for the health of older people, such as fear of falling and increased susceptibility to falls. Age-associated changes related to balance and postural control includes a decline in muscle strength and sensory function, and a decrease in the velocity of sensory-motor responses. Approximately 22% of the population over 65 years of age has some balance dysfunction, particularly in functional tasks like ambulation and climbing stairs.
